Linear Obsessional presents the new album from English underground pop mainstays The Original Beekeepers, who have been releasing low-level works of sardonic pop genius for the best part of 30 years.  "How The River Runs Dry" is a collection of interconnected songs that piece together a story set in British suburbia. Featuring dryly humorous lyrics and the kind of intricate arrangements (including a brass section and guest vocalists) for which the band has become known, this album,...

A soundtrack to the J G Ballard short story. Linear Obsessional's first release of synthesizer music (but our second of music related to the work of JG Ballard see LOR010), Paul Wady's haunting and austere work took something like 30 years to reach fruition. Finally recorded in 2009 "The Terminal Beach" is as strange, emotionally void and as powerfully compulsive as its subject matter "I found many ways out of this nihilistic world of the early 80s. But it left me with a great...

"Electrical Tape" is an album of music for the Mellotron, composed and performed by Duncan Goddard of Radio Massacre International. Notes- Outside of folk music, very few instruments carry as much cultural baggage as the Mellotron. In the same way pipes and drums instantly evoke Scotland, an accordion Paris, pan-pipes South America, so the strange tones of the Mellotron instantly bring you to the 1970s and particularly progressive rock and German experimental rock. This connection may...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present a new album by London based improvising cellist Hannah Marshall. "Tulse Hill" is a series of improvisations on a cello with the strings de-tuned to new pitches. This makes different resonances and creates pleasing tone relationships between the open strings. I first started playing in this way while working with a movement artist Nikki Tomlinson on a piece performed in Spitalfields church in May 2009. The reason I continued to play and make...

A while back, Frans de Waard said in a review of my music published in his Vital Weekly that, perhaps he had been "clouded by ill-judgement" in that he had been under the impression that I was just "one of the drone boys". I was a little amused by this because, aside from my association with Drone Forest, I had (up until that time) never actually put out much music under my name that could really be categorized as pure drone music. Drones have been an important touchstone in...

Composer Sam Fendrich's latest collection (his fourth for Linear Obsessional) continues in the vein of the shorter works heard on "The Unquestioned Answer", with concise, maximal, dense structures punctuated by allusions to other genres (in this case including jazz, blues and rock) and all employing the restless imagination and mordant wit that characterises his work.  "LIFE" (terms and conditions apply) however has an added urgency - all the pieces are recent compositions,...

LO is excited to present this extraordinary collection of evocative and hallucinogenic works by the US composer Bruce Hamilton. "Drams" is a collection of sound works held together by connections to notions of dreaming. While many of the pieces are, in a sense, ambient, whether from the presence of drones or use of field recordings, my intent was more to create a kind of animated presence- a surreal and vivid soundscape. Some of these works were the result of participation in online...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present this atmospheric work by Dave Clarkson, inspired by childhood memories.  "Music for Lighthouses  Early fires built on hilltops.....an entrance marker to ports. Beacons illuminated via wood and coal. Illumination with smokeless flame.....  Leasowe lighthouse (located on the North Wirral foreshore, NW England) is the oldest brick built lighthouse in Britain. The fourth of Linear Obsessional's annual "Open Access" compilations of tracks exactly two minutes long. This time the theme was the human voice.  112 tracks from around the globe exploring all manner of approaches to the sounds of the "first instrument"  "....The results are here- an astonishing 112 tracks, that's 3 hours and 44 minutes. Itself a pretty sobering statistic. As before, tracks have come from all around the world, from musical and non-musical friends,...

"Malapert and Erratic" Or "a peculiar use of language" (Notes taken from PDF booklet available with download) Current Obsessions When approached to put together a release for Linear Obsessional I initially considered providing a long structured solo soprano saxophone piece. This would have excluded the greater part of my current activity and interest. In particular my aspiration to remove performance completely and publish little instructions on the re-creation and...

Linear Obsessional is delighted to present a collection of minimalist slow motion "ambient" works by the Californian composer Paul H. Muller. Despite the similarity of approach on all the tracks, this collection demonstrates the variety that Paul achieves, from the almost Wagner like chords of "Water Receding" to the submerging choir of "Bathyscape". This edition comes with 6 PDF files of composer's notes and scores. NOTES BY THE COMPOSER How These Pieces Are...

"The Earliest Humans" is an explorative guitar record, (originally released on Pearman's own "Fat Ghost" label) revelling in unconventional textures and unexpected harmonics. The album works in under-explored string sounds from over-the-bridge twangs to clock-like chimes built around the ghostly, silver-thin strains of a resonator guitar. This is post-Fahey American-primitive playing pushed through digital filters and beyond. Recorded throughout 2010 in Balham, South London....

Seeing as Longstone's album "Risaikuru" was built around the theme of recycling and renewal, it seems more logical than usual to produce an album of remixes.  The Linear Obsessional artists asked to contribute have come up with a series of radical remixes of the original material - putting the sources through kaleidoscopic transformations, additions, subtractions and reconfigurations that enhance the power and beauty of "Risaikuru", whilst re-imagining the landscapes evoked...

The recordings in this release are all of items that are usually powered by electricity - a Casio keyboard, a Korg midi controller, a Fender electric guitar, a digital camera, and an Xbox controller. All of these things lose most, or all, of their functionality when starved of power. By close mic'ing, or attaching piezos, I have amplified the accidental sounds of the switches, sliders, clips, cases, and textures of the objects, and have presented familiar items in an unfamiliar way. Recorded on...

For his second album for Linear Obsessional, Dirch Blewn (AKA South London electronicist David Bloor) produces one of the strangest and most arcane and compelling albums we've released. With several tracks recorded whilst camping in the countryside, featuring resonating gongs, cymbals and road signs, his own instruments and ample interventions from surrounding wildlife.  Despite the detailed notes about the tracks in the accompanying PDF booklet, the impression remains of eavesdropping on some...

This short (thirteen minute) release is an attempt to deconstruct one of J.G Ballard's 'condensed novels' - "The Atrocity Exhibition", written in 1969. I created lists with specific rules (such as monosyllabic, French punctuation, or proper nouns), and graphic poetry using those lists. Then I read the graphic poems live with an electric bass plugged into an old guitar amplifier, and an acousmatic patch controlled with a laptop. I then divided the recording into ten tracks. -Jerome...

"Hourse" is a collection of pieces by Alex Charles, built around loops recorded on small portable instruments (thumb pianos, violin, accordion, percussion, larynx). Each piece follows a singular direction as loops are gradually accreted live to make fascinating polyrhythmic constructions. Linear Obsessional is proud to present "Tape Loops" - the fruit several months labour by the Colorado based composer c.reider. Getting deep into the process and working with thrift-store cassettes he uses a number of radical techniques to create his tape loops, including lengthening the tape, shredding it , making new tapes from tiny fragments and reassembling them.  The resulting piece is a haunting and mesmeric meditation on the texture of sound recorded on magnetic tape and is one...

NE Trethowan is an electronic musician who lives in Tampere, Finland. Grammostola is an exquisite collection of his works. His music is often full of dense resonances and fleeting miasmic textures- evocative, gripping and very beautiful. I'd also hope that it suggests some distance from active human composition and authorship. Possibly something like the...
